Uttarakhand overview

Uttarakhand is modestly referred to as the land of the Gods. The home of the creator, the preserver and the destroyer, it is also the birth place of the holy Ganges. Tucked away in the north those who have read up on their Hindu epics might well be keen to make a yatra or pilgrimage to the area. The ideal time to come is in summer when the crowds have gone. The Garhwal foothills are perfect for those who don’t fancy joining the climbers on the peaks. The pace of life is slow here but the backdrop of mountains, glaciers, forests and temples make this part of India a little bit special. There is also fabulous rafting to be had on the Ganges headwaters. Visitors to the Jim Corbett National Park could even sneak a glimpse of a tiger, or at least some of the wonderful animals that tigers like to eat.
